Before we changed to a web based platform we were creating realistically rendered environments such as this Oil rig.
When we changed to a web based platform we needed to create an art style that would reduce the impact textures and models would have on performance.
Our simplified and exaggerated art style allowed us to reduce the need for realistic details for most objects in a scene, without losing visual fidelity and believability. We were able to drastically reduce the number of higher resolution texture maps, normal maps and high poly models in a scene, often replacing them with low resolution repeat textures and low poly models.
